High School K-12 Education
Walt Whitman High School.
Bethesda, Maryland
Walt Whitman High School, a three-story, 250,000 SF school, was undersized on account of increased enrollment. RRMM designed a three-story wing addition on the east side of the school. The addition includes classrooms, laboratories, a digital art room, social and emotional services suite, a career child development suite, and a commons area that expands student dining. With the addition being three stories tall and close to surrounding residences, it was sheathed in glass to minimize its bulk.
Due to site topography, the first floor of the existing school is below grade, with a main entrance located on the southern side. Since the addition was added to the east of the existing building, connections to the new addition only occur on the second and third floor.
