Charles Houston Recreation Center.
Alexandria, Virginia
Charles Houston Recreation Center, located in a transitional neighborhood of an historic city, replaced a previous facility that was not meeting the needs of the community. RRMM worked with the neighborhood and the Department of Parks and Recreation to develop a building program, explore how the facility would fit on the site, and prepare optional design solutions to gain community approval as the first step in gaining political support and funding the project. The new 35,000 SF facility includes facilities for the Department of Recreation, seniors, network pre-school, and the Department of Health.
This new recreation center is constructed in the Parker Grey Historic District of Alexandria. It’s architectural expression was designed so that it was appropriate for the neighborhood. This project achieved LEED Gold certification.
