K-12 Education Middle School
Falling Creek Middle School.
Chesterfield County, Virginia
The new Falling Creek Middle School constructed in Chesterfield County, is a replacement middle school supporting a student enrollment of 1,800 students. The main core spaces (Administration, Kitchen, Cafeteria, Gymnasium, Auxiliary Gymnasium, Auditorium, Music Classrooms) are predominantly one-story with a second-story media center accessed from the three-story classroom wing.
CCPS opted for a combination of load-bearing masonry and thin brick-clad precast exterior walls to increase efficiency and expedite the construction schedule.
Due to space constraints, the new building was planned to be constructed on the same site as the existing Falling Creek Elementary and Middle Schools, both of which will remain in operation once the new building opens. The former Falling Creek Middle School will be used as a swing space for Bensley Elementary School students over the next two years while their school is being replaced.
The design offers flexibility for public use, as the classroom wing portion can be closed off to the public for after-hours use of the Cafeteria, Auditorium, and Gymnasiums. Collaborative learning areas are positioned throughout the corridors of the classroom wings to promote a variety of functions. Courtyards are located between classroom wings offering the school a setting for outdoor learning and gathering. Site amenities will ultimately include a new outdoor track surrounding a football and soccer field, along with a multi-purpose field serving baseball and softball.
At 240,000 SF, Falling Creek is the largest middle school in Central Virginia.
