Elementary School K-12 Education Middle School
Southside STEM Academy at Campostella.
Norfolk, Virginia
The new three-story Southside STEM Academy at Campostella replaced Campostella Elementary School, which was demolished for construction of the new facility. The new 181,149 SF facility houses 1,147 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The new building, completed 70 days ahead of schedule, is organized around the STEM school concept. Each grade level is broken down into a grade level house which consists of flexible classrooms, small group shared project rooms, STEM activity and prep room areas, storage rooms, and teacher workrooms. Site features include clearly defined areas for pedestrian traffic, a full-size football field and multi-use playfields, and outdoor classroom, and a building facade that is designed to blend into the surrounding community.
This project was completed as part of a PPEA (Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act) with Norfolk Public Schools and the City of Norfolk. Southside STEM Academy at Campostella was one of five new elementary schools for Norfolk as part of the Building the Future PPEA initiative.
